Up to Speed

I know, I know, this is way overdue, I'm failing pretty hard at blogging my travel life and au pairing experience so far, so let's bring you up to speed.
Since I have arrived here in January I have:

Been back to Florence.

Moved to Milan and in with my au pair family.

Been to London.

Been to Stonehenge.

Been to Dublin.

Back to Rome.

Been to Lake Como, Venice, and Mykonos, Greece with new found Texan friends.

Completed a language course with the Comune di Milano + more.

Taught American classiness to the girls.

Took a day trip back to Florence for a documentary premiere.

Eaten my weight in gelato.

Taught more American classiness for the 4th of July.

And now I am currently spending two weeks free from girls and work while they are at the coast with their aunt and grandfather. Two weeks from now we will all be heading out on holiday (long tour of Italy, spending most time in Sicily at a villa).
I hope to divulge into each of these places/events that have taken place in upcoming posts, maybe inspire someone else to travel or decide to au pair as well. I have learned that au pairing is in no way shape or form an easy job, and anyone who says contrary is straight up lying to you, but I wouldn't change this decision if I could go back. It has it's hard moments and I've become quite homesick, but I think in the long run it'll be a decision I can be proud of.

The Countdown

Time has been slipping away from me so quickly. It seems not that long ago that I moved back to Los Angeles, became a waitress, quit being a waitress, got the babysitting twins job, starting religiously saving up money, found my future Italian family, and bought my ticket back to Italy.

Today is officially t-minus 1 week (7 days!!!) until I leave. My mind is constantly being filled with things to add to the never ending "TO DO" list, while my stomach is in a constant state of feeling like I'm going to throw up combined with that anxious feeling of excitement you get before going on an especially frightening roller coaster for the first time. I wish I could just sit down and relax, but whenever I try to my mind races on ahead of me worrying about anything and everything possible ("Do I have enough socks!?," "What boots should I wear on the plane?," "Can I fit all my electronics in my carry on bag?!," "What does one wear in the snow?!," etc. etc.)

In the meantime, I have been trying to do as much stuff that I've wanted to do before leaving the country for a possible year. I'm not even going to try to tackle information on everything but I thought I'd share some photos from the past months or so to try to sum up my adventures in good ol' US of A before I say goodbye.
Dressed up as Fionna from Adventure Time at Stan Lee's Comikaze Expo in Los Angeles.
Time spent with friends - Ralph and I
Bowie and me at Amoeba
Days and money spent at Amoeba
Movie/show night with friends
Show included a debate between presidential candidates Frankenstein's monster and the Wolfman
Halloween spent with the twins
My wonder twins
My baby
Stanley Kubrick exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (which was AMAZING)

The Unhappiest of all reindeer
Love!
Fun learnings at the Natural History Museum with friends
Time spent with my best friend
My best friend is one supreme mother - Charlie's first birthday party!

This will most likely be my last update from Los Angeles, so here's to new beginnings! Next time I blog I'll be bloggin from another country! How crazy is that!? I still think over and over that I must be completely mad and totally out of my mind to have made such a life changing decision to abandon my American life in the way that I am, but hopefully at the end of it all I will look back on the decision and be confident that I made the right choice.

My next few days will be spent at Disneyland, one last dentist trip (you can never be too safe when it comes to proper dental hygiene!), going away gathering with family and friends, and my last two days spent packing and trying to organize a year's worth of necessities into one suitcase.

Changes

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
- J.R.R. Tolkien, "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring"
Sometimes things need to change.
That is now the theme of my life, or at least has been since about the end of February until now, hence why I haven't updated in so long. But that will change and as Tolkien put it perfectly for all who want to travel and expand their own personal world, "Not all those who wander are lost."

A quick break down of everything that has happened since February until now goes like this, my living situation changed dramatically, as did my relationship, by no cause of our own we had to part ways leaving me with many questions as to how to proceed so I did the only thing I could do to help myself and that was to find a new goal.

My new goal has become this: to return to Italy and start a new life, a new chapter, a new beginning, and to leave my worries, problems, stresses, and depression behind me. So at the beginning of the summer I found a job at a vegetarian/vegan restaurant and a babysitting (twins!) gig. I ended up quitting the restaurant job and now just focus on babysitting on a fairly regular basis and sewing as often as I can bring myself to.

In the middle of the summer I started looking for ways to move to Italy through different jobs and finally settling on the idea of working as an au pair. So I created a profile on an au pair website and sent messages to around 20+ different people and finally found my match in my future au pair/host family in Milan, Italy.

I have stashed away as much money as I can in the past several months, bought my ticket a few months ago and have been planning and preparing for my impending departure on January 8th, 2013.

I still have a lot that I need to get to (finalizing my working contract, buying all necessary electronics to feel like I am still somewhat connected to my American family, friends, and life, getting luggage arranged, health insurance, travel shots, exchanging dollars for euors, buying snow friendly clothing, because as a native Los Angeles woman I have no idea how to dress for such weather, and everything else I've already forgotten) but mentally I feel that I am ready for this departure and major life change. I plan on staying for a minimum of 6 months-maximum of 1 year, so by no means is that a short amount of time abroad.

I know it will be hard and challenging (especially being an au pair to two girls, ages 6 and 10, who don't speak a word of English and me with my infant level of Italian vocabulary and grammar) but I feel like this is something I need to do. This past year has been hard on me mentally, emotionally, and sometimes physically, so I think it's time to check out and check into my Italian life away from home, safety, and the comfort of my American lifestyle.

So, reading this I hope you now understand what direction I plan on taking this blog. I want to help other au pairs out there, people wondering if they should do this (because, believe me, this was not an easy decision), I can tell you right now, I don't know if I'm making the right decision, I don't know if I'm going to regret this all a few months after being there, I really don't know. But I plan on discovering that all on my own, in my own time, and in my own way. There really is a huge lack of blogs and personal experiences out there that are easily accessible for people like me to find and help them make their own decision concerning this sort of life changing moment, so I'd like to try to help that.
I hope to accurately record the horrible moments, the good moments, the really frightening moments, to the really great and wonderful moments. All of it, here for you to see and think for yourself is this is something you might want to do.

As of today I am t-minus 46 days until I drive over to LAX and say "ARRIVEDERCI!"  to America, and "CIAO!" once again to my beautiful italia.

How Flickr Got It Right - Italy

One thing I find really interesting is looking through some of the amazing photos people post on Flickr. One of the best ways to find photos is to search for a certain tag and since I am obviously in love with Italy I thought I'd discover a some more of Italy through the Flickr photos. (Insert PBS cheesy travel show intro here.) So, come with me! And discover some of Italy's greatest places.
